Governor Wike shares why Rivers State acquired Shell’s 45% Oil Mining Lease 11 (OML)

Governor, Nyesom Wike, made an announcement on Monday 30th September 2019, that the state government had decided to acquire Shell Petroleum Development Company’s 45 per cent stake in Oil Mining Lease 11 (OML 11). He stated that it was in the best interest of the people of the state.

Gov. Wike said this during a state broadcast which was held at the Government House in Port Harcourt. He further explained that Rivers State had suffered the worst and the most environmental degradation from oil-related operations, which had to obstruct the development of the state. Governor Wike recollected that a case concerning the control of the Oil Mining Lease11 began since 2001 and was disposed of about 10 years later.

He added that the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) had appealed the outcome of the court rulings on the matter until it was finally dismissed in 2017. In the Governor Wike speech which was titled, ‘We will continue to advance the state’s interest, security and prosperity of all’, Governor Nyesom Wike further explained that Ejama Ebubu community began the enforcement by settling the judgement in the State High Court and imposing the execution on the SPDC’s moveable items.

The people of Port Harcourt are presently of the support that the Governor is on the right track to getting their rights back from the government as they have always claimed they are not being treated fairly despite the fact that half of the wealth of the country comes from their state.
